The aging population and the growing number of older adults living alone present new social and technological challenges. More and more families must balance their personal and professional lives with caring for their elderly relatives, leading to anxiety, stress, and a sense of lack of control over their well-being. At the same time, many older adults wish to maintain their independence, even though they face difficulties using complex technologies or managing daily tasks such as medication or medical appointments. In this context, there is a need to design digital tools that facilitate care, promote autonomy, and reduce feelings of loneliness.

The challenge of designing an accessible and user-friendly app. Method used: Design Thinking

Mia’s main challenge is to create an app that connects seniors, family members, and caregivers through a simple, clear, and emotionally engaging experience. The design had to address two key needs: on the one hand, offering safety and support to seniors; on the other, providing peace of mind and organization for families. To achieve this, the app integrates features such as medication reminders, geolocation, an SOS button, a shared calendar, and direct communication between family members. All of this is accompanied by an interface tailored to older adults, with clear visual elements, simple interaction, and the option to use voice commands or virtual assistants to lower the technological barrier.

Results: Technology That Brings Families Closer Together

The result is Mía, an app designed to improve the quality of life for older adults and reduce the emotional burden on their caregivers. The platform centralizes information, facilitates family communication, and allows users to monitor the older adult’s well-being without infringing on their autonomy. Testing has shown strong acceptance of the concept and a high success rate in navigating the app, demonstrating that a clear and accessible design can make a difference in this type of solution. In short, Mía offers technology that not only manages care but also strengthens family bonds and the sense of support.
